10 Things to Know Before Visiting Big Bend Ranch State Park

After speaking to the park ranger at the Barton Warnock Visitor Center, who recommended the Ojito Adentro Trail, I decided that the first stretch of the main road into the interior of Big Bend Ranch State Park would be doable for our Toyota Camry.

The park is divided into two parts: the exterior and the interior.

The exterior is the only paved road in the entire park — FM 170, also known as Camino del Rio or River Road. National Geographic has called it one of the prettiest drives in America, and I would not argue with that. The road twists and turns through mountains and canyons, and you never know which way it is going to go next. It is filled with breathtaking views and is genuinely enjoyable to drive. This was the highlight of the park for us.

River Road runs from the Barton Warnock Visitor Center (east entrance) to Fort Leaton State Historic Site (west entrance). In between, you will find campsites, trailheads, and pullouts — but no cell service.

The interior houses the majority of the park, including the Sauceda Ranger Station, whose ranger office is closed until further notice though facilities remain open. This is where the type of vehicle you have comes into play. The entirety of the park outside of River Road is unpaved and off-road. You will want a 4x4 or high-clearance vehicle that can handle unpaved, rocky, and bumpy roads.

The park ranger told us our Toyota Camry could probably handle the main park road up until Cinco Tinajas. We made it to the Ojito Adentro Trailhead with no problems — I was driving carefully and slowly, making sure to avoid larger rocks. On the way back, I was more confident the car would be fine. I started driving faster and paying less attention. That was a mistake. I ended up with a flat tire. I put on the spare and decided to worry about it in the morning since it was getting dark. I was able to drive River Road on the spare with no problem and made it back to the campsite.

It is possible to drive part of the main road in a sedan, but you need to be careful and drive slowly. You do risk getting a flat — but do not worry. By the end of this guide, you will know what to do if you find yourself in that situation.

There are interior and exterior campsites at BBRSP. Interior campsites require going off-road. Exterior campsites sit along River Road and are accessible by a normal vehicle.

From east to west, the exterior campsites are Grassy Banks, Upper and Lower Madera, La Cuesta, and Arenosa. All other campsites are interior and require a high-clearance or 4x4 vehicle to reach.

When we made our reservations, we did not know we would not be able to reach the interior campsites. We picked a campsite at random. Luck is usually on my side, but not when we were making those reservations — it was impossible for us to even accidentally select the right campsite. You can avoid this by following the reservation guide below.

The park rangers were very helpful and walked us through our options. Making and changing reservations at the visitor center was easy. Camping is $12 per night on top of the daily entrance fee. The entrance fee for ages 13 and above is $5 per person. Ages 12 and below are free. If you have a Texas State Park Pass, entry is free.

We were coming from Del Rio, Texas and made a few stops along the way — specifically Pecos River High Bridge, the tallest bridge in Texas, and Seminole Canyon State Park and Historic Site. That could only mean one thing: we were going to be late.

We called ahead and let the park know. We thought we would not arrive until 9:00 PM, but we ended up getting there at 5:00 PM. What happened was when I put in directions to "Big Bend Ranch State Park," the map routed us to the center of the park and had us walking three and a half hours. Make sure you enter the visitor center as your destination to get an accurate arrival time. If you are coming from the east, use Barton Warnock Visitor Center, 21800 FM 170, Terlingua, TX 79852.

Despite the earlier arrival, we still did not make it in time and had no idea where our campsite was. We were hoping to see a sign with our campsite name but never did, and because we were inside the park, we had no data. We ended up driving all the way back to the Barton Warnock Visitor Center to get a signal. By chance, we saw a park ranger walking around after hours and asked him what we should do.

He was incredibly helpful. He told us we would not be able to reach our campsite because of our car and said to just pick one of the exterior campsites off of River Road, set up camp, and change the reservation in the morning.

The campsites work by section. When you reserve a campsite — Grassy Banks, for example — you are reserving that section. The actual campsites within that section are first come, first served.

If you are reading this on your way there and you accidentally selected an interior campsite, just set up camp in an open exterior site and let the visitor center know in the morning. They can change your reservation to the site you slept at if it is available. Try to call ahead about this first.

The morning we were supposed to check in, we slept in until 11:00 AM. I would recommend waking up earlier. We woke up to a state police officer asking if we had a reservation and what we were doing there. We were able to explain the situation and show him a screenshot of our reservation. We were lucky to have that screenshot — there is no data out there, and we could not pull up the reservation on our phones. He needed to actually see it. It was no real problem, but it was definitely an "oh shit" moment first thing in the morning.

"No shade" did not mean anything to me until I came to Big Bend Ranch State Park. There was no escape from the sun. It felt like I was in a western where you could just hear the heat with the sun beating down on you. With no reprieve, hiking became a real challenge. You will need adequate water and sunscreen.

I was able to get a few trails in, particularly the Hoodoos Trail and about three-quarters of the Ojito Adentro Trail. I recommend the Hoodoos Trail — the rock formations were interesting and unique within the park. The Ojito Adentro Trail, which is interior to the park on the main road (off-road and unpaved), dragged on. It was flat with very little scenery change, which did not mix well with the complete lack of shade. I got the feeling that many of the trails here follow that pattern — the first few miles are flat and unchanging before things open up.

It was also extremely dry and dusty, which added to the already harsh conditions. If you are coming from a more humid environment like Florida, it could be harder to breathe and you will need even more water. This reminded me of hiking around Salt Lake City, Utah in August 2024. I was on the Ensign Peak Trail, which was a nice hike but mostly uphill. By the end I was out of breath, which was unusual for me.

During the day, I was getting attacked by small gnats and biting bugs. There were also wasps everywhere, which was not fun. This was especially true at Fort Leaton, where there was an infestation of wasps. I used bug spray during the day and wore lightweight long-sleeve shirts and pants in an attempt to protect myself.

The reason I only completed three-quarters of the Ojito Adentro Trail is because I ran into an animal. I did not know if it was a mountain lion at first, so I turned around. I was already hesitant about continuing — I had to pass through a gate that AllTrails showed as private property, then I approached a fallen tree I would have to scramble over, and there was clearly a wasp nest nearby as black wasps were flying around my head and the general area. I did hear a bark-like sound before I saw the animal, and once I got back to the car and had data again, a quick search suggested it was likely a coyote or a gray fox.

Big Bend Ranch State Park is designated a dark sky park by DarkSky International. This means the sky is dark enough to see the stars and the Milky Way with the naked eye. I knew this going in, but it did not prepare me for what I actually saw. In my mind, I have seen stars all over the world and plenty of them. The night sky here rivaled what I saw in the Galapagos Islands. The stars looked absolutely amazing and I was taken aback by how clear they were.

We watched the sunset from a pullout on Big Hill and then lay on the back of our car to watch the stars come out. It was peaceful and breathtaking at the same time. The temperature was perfect — I was not cold or hot and could just lie there and take it all in. As mentioned earlier, I did not have any problems with mosquitoes and did not even need bug spray on Big Hill while stargazing.

I highly recommend doing the same. Make sure you use the western pullout, as the sun sets in the west. What I did not have was a way to make lying on the car comfortable. Bring a thick blanket or mat to lay over the back of your car, a comfortable pillow, and a small blanket if you want to feel cozy. This can also be really romantic if you are trying to impress your significant other.

BBRSP is remote. I did not pack enough food, though I did have enough water. We had a large case of water, hot dogs, marshmallows, and some ramen — but between the burn ban (more on that below) and poor planning, we ended up surviving on beef jerky from Buc-ee's, precooked hot dogs, and dry ramen.

There is a Lajitas General Store nearby, but it is expensive. Their sandwiches were good but ran about $12.50 each. A can of Zyn was about $12.50 and coffee was around $5. Gas was about $4.90 a gallon at the time. We ate there once and decided it was too expensive for our budget.

For budgeting purposes, pack your own food. Do not rely on the general store for meals.

We had no problems with border patrol, but they do have checkpoints. They asked us questions like where we were born and whether we are U.S. citizens. It did not impact us, but it caught me off guard at first — I was not expecting checkpoints. There were also police and border patrol vehicles roughly every mile. When I reached the first checkpoint, I was worried I was leaving the country or driving into a restricted area.

This was my first experience being this close to the U.S.–Mexico border. It is not a big deal, but it is something to be aware of if you have never been near the southern border before.

When I hear camping, I hear campfire, but you are not allowed to have a fire in Big Bend Ranch State Park. It is extremely dry, and the risk of accidentally starting a wildfire is real. I was hoping to cook hot dogs and roast marshmallows, but the burn ban made that impossible.

This changed what we needed to pack. Instead of food you can cook over a fire, you need food that does not require one and can last the duration of your trip. Think protein bars for the trails, lunch meat and bread, fruit, beef jerky, and other high-protein, high-carb options that do not need to be cooked.

You can bring a portable grill or tabletop stove. You just cannot have an open fire.

What do you do if you get a flat tire in remote Big Bend? My first stop after speaking with a cashier at the Lajitas General Store was Diego's Tire Repair Shop. They recommended the place, and getting out there was an adventure on its own.

It is located east of the Barton Warnock Visitor Center, about a 20-minute drive. The route follows FM 170, so the drive was scenic and enjoyable. We got a little nervous when we had to turn onto a dirt road to reach it — flashing back to the main park road — but this road was gentler and smoother. I was still driving carefully since we were on a donut.

We arrived at the destination but did not see it for a few seconds because the map took us slightly short. Once you spot it, you cannot miss it — it is a house, specifically Diego's house, surrounded by old cars and tires with a round painted sign out front. It had more character than any corporate tire shop and made the trip even more memorable.

Diego was very friendly but only spoke Spanish, which was no hay problema — but you should know that ahead of time so you do not start rambling in English. I did, and he understood because I was standing there holding my flat tire. I felt bad because I could have had a translator app ready to explain the situation. He repaired the two holes in our tire for $40 — about three Lajitas General Store sandwiches. I tipped him an extra ten because $40 was more than fair, especially for short notice with nowhere else to go.

I hope this helps you and that by just reading this article, you have all the information you need. These really are the things that if I had foresight would have helped me a ton. The two biggest being that you need an off-road vehicle and then what campsites you can access with a normal car.
